2200' Barge to Barge Drill
Galveston Bay, Tx
January 1, 2021
D&S was hired to steer a directional barge-to-barge bore for a petroleum pipeline across Galveston Bay. The Fusion-Gyro was chosen due to the long water crossing and the inability to lay traditional wire water grids. Additionally, environmentally sensitive oyster beds in the bore path prevented the placement of a coil. The challenging barge-to-barge drilling over open water with changing sea conditions made a traditional coil impractical. Instead, a small entrance and exit coil were used to locate the tool for a tie-in and punch out. Water grids at this depth and conditions are inherently inaccurate, but the Fusion-Gyro was dead-on upon exit, completing the bore. The exit coil served as a redundancy and second verification of location. The Fusion-Gyro operated flawlessly and proved to be more accurate than traditional coils on exit under these conditions, completing the pilot hole on three separate occasions at varying depths with the same results due to hole conditions on reaming and product pullback.
